France is known for its popular capital, well known architecture and seaside cities. Yet, France has so much more to offer than the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Much of France has yet to be truly discovered by tourists, so we have put together a small guide detailing our favourite hidden gems in France. These locations are based around the Limousin region in south-central France.
Limoges city
Limoges is a largely underrated city in southwest-central France. As such, this beautiful medieval city is generally undiscovered by tourists. Getting there couldn’t be easier, as the city has great railway links as well as its own international airport. By car, it is a 3 hour drive from Bordeaux, and a 4 hour drive from Paris.
The small cobbled streets of Limoges takes you back to medieval times and the Gothic cathedral is a fantastic sight to behold. Nearby, taste classic French crepes at Crêperie de la Cathédrale before wandering through the shopping district and towards Les Halles Centrales, a lively market hall.
Lac d’Eguzon
Around an hour’s drive from Limoges, Éguzon-Chantôme is a small village located at the side of a lively lake. Éguzon Lake offers fun for the whole family; with a variety of watersports and inflatables on offer and a beach to relax on, you certainly won’t be bored!
This is the perfect summer location… but if you are visiting out of season, don’t fret! The village also hosts a Chestnut Fair at the beginning of every November. The whole village celebrates this festival; chestnuts are eaten, apples are pressed and cider is drunk in plenty!
Forteresse de Crozant
Between the confluence of two rivers, the Medieval fortress of Crozant can be found standing tall above the rest of the Creuse landscape. The drive up is a journey in itself – the narrow road twists and turns through the forest. When you reach the top, there is a free car parking area and you can enter the fortress for just 4 euros.
The ruins are a fascinating place to learn about medieval French history. What’s more, because of where the fortress is situated, you get incredible panoramic views of the valley. Directly next to the fortress there is also a great restaurant, Restaurant des Ruines, which offers a simple yet fantastic menu. Go early to get a window seat so you can enjoy your food whilst overlooking the valley!
Auberge de la Plage
Looking for a remote, French getaway? Look no further! Auberge de la Plage is a stunning campground situated right on the edge of River Creuse. Here you can relax on the man-made beach and swim in the fresh, clear water. Rowboats, pedal boats and paddle boards are available for you to rent and there is also an area for cliff jumping.
The campsite has a restaurant serving delicious pizzas and burgers and there is a terrace overlooking the river. Whether you book a chalet or cabin or just visit for the day, you are sure to experience a great sense of calm in this beautiful location.
Les Hérolles Market
On the 29th day of every month, the French hamlet Les Hérolles holds a traditional country market. Hoards of farmers head to the village to sell their livestock in what has become one of the largest markets in France. Since its beginning over 400 years ago, the market has grown significantly and now offers anything you could ever need – fresh produce, live animals, household items … and much more! This market truly is a unique French experience.
