The 5 best things to do in Malta!
Looking for the best things to do in Malta? Look no further! We have compiled 5 of the very best things we did on our adventure in the beautiful Malta!
Malta is one of our favourite places to explore. Consisting of a small group of islands off the coast of Sicily, the country has tons of history, culture and scenery to enjoy. Our top tip for exploring this small country is to make use of the fantastic transport connections. You can travel across the country by bus in only a few hours… and for very cheap! This makes it a fantastic place to explore in just a few days. We have rounded up the TOP 5 MUST DO’s if you are visiting Malta this summer.
1. Sight-seeing in Valletta
There is plenty to do and see in Malta’s capital city. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valletta is brimming with grand churches and historical sites across the city. Stroll through the ancient city gates and explore Saint John’s Cathedral. Wander around the Lower Barrakka Gardens and admire the views from the Seige Bell War Memorial. Why not also relax in the sun whilst enjoying a beautiful ‘flower gelato’ from Amerino. If you are looking for a bite to eat, make sure you grab a seat on the slanted St. Lucia’s Street and enjoy a traditional ftira from Grano. No matter what you get up to, Valetta is a fantastic place which certainly has something for everyone.
2. Take a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon
North of Malta’s main island, you will find Comino and Gozo. For an exciting day trip, you must head to Comino! This area is truly beautiful and gives you opportunities to swim, snorkel and relax. Here you can admire the glorious azure waters of the Blue Lagoon, explore magical caves and even experience the underwater world when diving. There are several boat trips that will take you there, including a hop-on, hop-off boat and the Fernandes pirate ship. If you have more time, escape to the magical island of Gozo for the weekend. This sister island is a perfect, peaceful escape where you can unwind and enjoy the quieter side of Malta.
3. Day trip to Marsaxlokk
On the South-East coast of Malta, you will find the beautiful working fishing village of Marsaxlokk. The small and picturesque bay is adorned with colourful fishing boats, known as luzzu’s, floating calmly on the water. You can appreciate the glorious view with a coffee (or glass of wine!) from waterfront cafes such as Harbour Lights. For a refreshing dip in the blue waters, visit St. Peters Pool where you can even try cliff jumping if you are feeling adventurous! Be sure to visit Marsaxlokk on a Sunday, when the village holds their fantastic produce, souvenir and seafood market. This will give you the fantastic opportunity to experience local Maltese life. This village really is a magnificent place! To read more about our experience in this glorious village, check out our blog post ‘A Love Affair With Marsaxlokk’.
4. Explore Mdina
A fortified city located in the middle of Malta, this ex-capital city holds an abundance of history. Get lost roaming the narrow, maze-like streets, and experience a feeling of being taken back in time as you enjoy the beautiful architecture that Mdina has to offer. To get the most out of your time in the ‘silent city’, tourist boards offer walking tours with educated guides offering their full knowledge of the historical town. After a full day of walking you will need a rest, so grab a table upstairs in Fontanella Tearooms to experience beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, opt to sit in the beautiful courtyard at Coogi’s and enjoy delicious cake and wine.
5. Experience the nightlife
St. Julian’s is a hub for nightlife. You can chill in a bar, eat delicious food, drink in elegant wine bars or dance the night away in one of the many nightclubs. Just across the port from Valletta, St. Julian’s truly has it all. If you are looking to completely immerse yourself in the party scene, make sure to head for Paceville, a small district within St. Julian’s. This area houses the centre of the party landscape. During the day, recharge at the beautiful sandy beach of St. George’s Bay. It may be crowded, but this is the perfect location to enjoy an array of water sports and boat rides on offer. What a fantastic place to unwind after a week full of fun and exploration!
